Cuphea ignea ‘Variegata’
Variagated Cigar plant
LYTHRACEAE, The Loostrife family
Grown by Viva nursery, this variegated-leaf cigar plant has bright orange flowers with a tiny purple accent. I used it in the planters with the Bay standards.
I was very inspired by Proven Winners fall container plantings book. (I know it’s not autumn yet- but I work in retail- I have to think a season ahead.) The textures and subtle colors were very pleasing, and some of the plant uses surprising. There were many perennials used as container plants, such as the purple and orange Heuchera and small Euphorbia.
This family also contains the invasive Eurasian plant Purple loosetrife (Lyrthrum), and the wonderfully colorful Crape myrtle trees. The Gooseneck loosetrife and other Lysimachia species are in the family Primulaceae.
